Fireplaces have always been the focal point of a room and provide beautiful architectural detail. They deserve a lot of attention because they are the centerpiece of the space. I will share the details that I consider when designing a fireplace mantle and hearth.
Tip #1: Choose an Anchor
Every mantle needs an anchor, whether it be a mirror, or a large piece of artwork, you need something in the middle that serves as the focal point to work off of.
Tip #2: Add Varying Heights/Groupings
Adding various heights and groupings through candlesticks, vases, and/or stacked books with decorative objects on top, will add visual interest. You can use this opportunity to showcase decor that is personal to you, for example, items from a memorable vacation, or family heirlooms that have been passed down.
Tip #3: Add Greenery
Every room needs greenery. Period. Greenery allows a space to come to life and adds fluidity to its surroundings. Faux stems are a wonderful resource because you don’t have to worry about maintaining them. Plus, these days they look so realistic in texture and color, that you can’t even tell the difference.
Tip #4: Add Layers
I love the look of layering on a mantle. It adds a touch of effortless sophistication to a space. You can layer with a picture over a mirror, or even with several pictures in various heights and sizes. Pictures also provide a great pop of color if needed. Linen covered or antique books are another great layering tool and can help to fill in gaps when a mantle is very wide. Check out the Halleck Project above as a reference.
Tip #5: Add Varying Textures
Try not to stick with too many similar materials, but vary the items and textures to keep things interesting and balanced. For example, using a variety of materials such as metal, terracotta, ceramic, and organic items, such as rattan and firewood, will add depth and visual interest.
Keep these tips in mind the next time you want to tackle a fireplace mantle and hearth remodel, or simply want to freshen things up.
Until Next Time,
Nicole
